Found before November 1965 along Tierra Blanca Creek, ~10 km southwest of Canyon in West Texas, the lone 860-gram stone was later recognized as a rare winonaite, one of only two examples ever recorded in the United States (the other being Winona, Arizona). A singular discovery from open ranch country, its entire known mass fits in the palm of a hand, which is why even micro-specimens are coveted.
Scientifically, Tierra Blanca occupies that fascinating threshold between primitive and evolved worlds: a “primitive achondrite” whose parent body began to melt but never fully differentiated. Petrographic work describes a coarse mosaic of orthopyroxene, olivine, plagioclase, and clinopyroxene—evidence of small-degree silicate melting and recrystallization rather than the chondrule-rich textures of ordinary chondrites. In other words, it’s a rare snapshot of planetary beginnings, preserved.
