Discovered by University of Arizona professor Jim Kriegh while metal-detecting for gold in the White Hills of Mohave County, Arizona (1995), Gold Basin became a classic American strewn field. Early surveys logged 1,484 stones / 61 kg across ~130 km²; subsequent work mapped >4,450 specimens / ~169 kg over ~225 km², with cosmogenic dating indicating a terrestrial age ~15,000 ± 600 years, one of the best-documented strewn fields in the literature.

Scientifically, Gold Basin is an L4 ordinary chondrite, a breccia of L-chondritic fragments, characterized by olivine Fa24±1 and low-Ca pyroxene Fs20Wo1, typically showing desert weathering W2–W3. In plain terms: a well-mapped, mildly metamorphosed stone whose fabric still carries chondrule texture and metal flecks, textbook L-group pedigree with a storied field history.
