Discovered in 2001 by an anonymous finder in the Western Saharan desert near Tagounite, many fusion-crusted stones totaling ~3 kg revealed a rarity: a CV3-anomalous carbonaceous chondrite, one of only four such meteorites approved to date. Cut faces show a graceful foliation with flattened chondrules and centimeter-scale CAIs, plus dark inclusions whose oxygen isotopes stand intriguingly apart from the host, an ancient collage with its own internal contrasts.
Scientifically, NWA 1465 is a type-3 carbonaceous chondrite with an anhydrous matrix of Fe-rich olivine, pyroxenes, troilite, magnetite, and trace FeNi metal, shock stage S4 and weathering W3, a well-preserved record of early solar system processing. Research on this meteorite notes pervasive deformation and alignment of components, consistent with its distinctive foliation and CV–CK transitional signatures.
