Recovered in 1994 from the forest of Mont-Dieu in France’s Ardennes, the find began with a rusted 45 kg mass and soon yielded ~50 additional pieces, some as large as 95 kg, for a documented total mass >360 kg. Officially recognized as Mont Dieu, principal material rests with the Paris Museum and UCLA.
Scientifically, Mont Dieu is a metallic ungrouped iron (historically described as a fine octahedrite, IIE) notable for its abundant troilite and schreibersite with rare chromite, silicate, and metallic copper inclusions, an alloyed canvas where subtle Widmanstätten figures meet primitive silicate stories. Modern studies of a large museum mass report centimeter-scale silicate inclusions, placing Mont Dieu at the crossroads of metal-stone histories within the early solar system.
